Pervasive Developmental Disorder - Not Otherwise Specified (PPD-NOS)

Pervasive Developmental Disorder - Not Otherwise Specified (PPD-NOS) is a catch-all diagnosis for people on the autism spectrum that have many but not all of the typical autism signs and symptoms. They will have difficulty in social interactions, repetitive behavior and sensitivities to certain stimuli (noise, light, clothing, etc.).

Those with PPD-NOS are different than others with on the spectrum in that they may exhibit some symptoms of those conditions seen in autism, they don’t fit enough of the criteria close enough to fully satisfy that set by the experts. Possibly their symptoms showed up at a later age than is typical for an autism diagnosis or their symptoms aren’t as severe.

Parents with children with PPD-NOS frequently find that they face the same challenges as those with autism. Their children might have one or more symptoms that are more severe than one who does have an autism diagnosis or one or more that are less. The fact that they might have a less severe symptom doesn’t make their symptoms easier to handle, though.
